Tech. Sgt. Alan C. Lawson, age 42, lost his battle with Melanoma Cancer on March 21, 2003. He was a jet engine mechanic with the Maintenance Squadron of the 183rd Fighter Wing, Springfield, IL. Alan had served with the 183rd Fighter Wing for the past 10 years - since February 20, 1993. He came to the Illinois Air National Guard after serving two tours of active duty with the Air Force and nearly two years with the Louisiana Air National Guard.

Alan was a loving dad, husband, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. He loved to golf, ride his Harley, and work on jet engines. He was also a fan of NASCAR, college football and basketball. He loved jazz, blues, blue grass and rock music. In memory of Alan, donations were made in lieu of flowers to the Young Heroes Program sponsored by the 183rd Fighter Wing” (for more details on Young Heroes, click here). Alan had deep love for these children called “Young Heroes”.

He would tell me often that the hardest thing for him to do was stand in formation with tears streaming down his face, while watching these brave children accept their recognition. Alan will always be remembered for his radiant smile, laughter, and his red hair. Our love and prayers go out to all who are caregivers and patients with the deadly skin disease Melanoma. (Patients call this disease the “BEAST”!)
